All Souls’ Day, Round 3 Mexican Day of the dead..

All Souls’ Day,  in the Roman Catholic church, a day for commemoration of all the faithful departed, those baptized Christians who are believed to be in purgatory.

November 2nd is also the third day of death worship in Mexico, they start with all hallows eve (Halloween), then celebrate all saints dead, and finish with the actual “Day of the Dead“. This image depicts an altar to worship and  remember the departed.

As mentioned in our halloween post, the aztecs believed the dead came a day a year to reunite with their loved ones. When Spain (Catholics) came to evangelize the natives, they assigned them a holiday for this, November 2nd, conveniently close to their All Saints day on November 1st (view yesterdays entry).

The celebrations continue….
