An eye for an eye- since 1772 BC

Diorite stela inscribed with the Code of Hammurabi.

The Hammurabi Code is the original creator of these getting even rules– BUT the retribution to be no worse than the crime.

The Code consists of 282 laws, with scaled punishments, adjusting “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”  as graded depending on social status, of slave versus free man.

Examples:

  • If a son strike his father, his hands shall be cutt off.
  • If a man put out the eye of another man, his eye shall be put out.
  • If he break another man’s bone, his bone shall be broken

This Babylonia code spread its essence through out most cultures and till the day!
