Seafood, pros and cons

Americans enjoy an average of 16 pounds of seafood and shellfish every year.

The benefits of eating seafood are clear: it’s a high-quality protein source, low in saturated fat and rich in polyunsaturated fats, particularly omega-3 fatty acids.

On the other hand, it is common for people to be allergic, for natural reasons and not to mention that they can also be contaminated with infectious microbes and toxic compounds such as mercury.

Quick facts:

– About 2 percent of adult Americans are believed to have food allergies, and allergies to shellfish are among the most common.

– The reactions vary, but they tend to be on the severe side.

– According to the FDA, 90% of food poisoning comes from eating seafood.
